He is looking directly ahead of himself to the right of the frame. He is wearing white pants and dark pants, hat, and shoes. He is holding a pen in his left hand and writing or drawing something on paper, with his other leaves of paper and ink bottle on the ground to his right. Standing behind the man, distanced to the left of the frame, is a woman looking down at the back of his head. Her hands are clasped behind her back and she is wearing a white, long-sleeved dress, dark stockings, white shoes, and ribbons in her hair.
