Image is of a graveyard under a canopy of trees. The title, “Sub Tegmine,” translates as “under the cover” or “under the canopy” and is most likely derived from the first line of Virgil’s ‘Eclogues,’ which reads “Tityre, tu patulae recubans sub tegmine fagi” or “You, Tityrus, 'neath a broad beech-canopy.” In the foreground, there are three burial plots marked by stones in the grass. Behind these are the backs of several tombstones with dark shading indicated by vertical lines. Towards the right side of the image there is one larger tombstone with a small wrought-iron fence around it. Over the tombstones are several trees. Buildings are visible in the distance, possibly a town or a city. The image is vertically displayed with a black border. The artist’s mark is visible on the bottom right-hand side of the image. Beneath the border in the bottom left-hand corner the engraver’s signature “Hare Sc.” is visible.
