GSV12-colman-smith-town-illustration

The hand-coloured half-page illustration has a thick, black square border, and is centered on the page above the text of the poem “The Town.” The image depicts a night scene in shades of deep blue and black, highlighted by small yellow and orange lights and red and orange fruits and flowers. In the centre foreground, a woman stands in profile, facing left, carrying a basket of oranges, a rose in her upswept brown hair. Behind her, two gentlemen in 18th-century dress walk toward the right, conversing. Behind them is a building, arcade, and grove, filled with people silhouetted in black. In the building, which rises on the right background of the image, silhouetted people are visible in a brightly lit orange window. In the right foreground, a briar of red roses is visible. The artist’s monogram is in the centre bottom of the image, in the woman’s skirt.
